Whaling Museum
Nantucket Historical Association Nantucket, Massachusetts
In 2005, the Nantucket Historical Association completed an important new project: the renovation of, and addition to, its historic whaling museum. The Museum Center now serves as the operational hub for all NHA properties and Museums. Amaze Design developed the design which integrates exhibits and building architecture within the historic framework of Nantucket. The content of this project focuses on the Nantucket whaling story and is complimented by four additional island themes: Making a Living, The Island Resort, Peopling the Island, and Ideologies. Exhibits feature a sperm whale skeleton, a whaling boat, an operating fresnel lens that projects a flashing beacon of light around the central exhibit space, and an oil-processing factory exhibit.
